Robert F.
Curry
Feb 3, 1943 — May 30, 2023
ROBERT FITZ RANDOLPH CURRY, SR. Robert Curry, Sr. died at Abington Hospital, Abington, PA on May 30, 2023 at the age of 80.
Bob was born in New Brunswick, New Jersey on February 3, 1943, the son of the late Andrew and Marie (Freeman) Curry. He was named for an uncle, bearing the middle name of one of the many old NJ families he descended from. He grew up in Metuchen, NJ, where he graduated from Metuchen High School in 1960; he was an active member of his school's track team, as well as various science and language clubs.
Bob got a job at Engelhard Corporation (now BASF) in Menlo Park, NJ as a custodian in 1963, while also earning a degree part-time at University College, Rutgers. After graduating from University College with a Bachelor of Science degree in Mathematics in 1967, he quickly rose the ranks at Engelhard, working as a Computer Scientist; he retired as the "Manager of Emerging Technologies" in 1998.
In 1966 he married Joanne Cosgrove, whom he had met on a blind date the previous year. Joanne pre-deceased Bob on November 17, 2022 after 56 years of marriage.
Initially residing in Edison and Hamilton Square, Bob and his family moved to Hillsborough, NJ in 1978. After retirement, Bob and Joanne moved to Long Beach Island, NJ, later moving to the Perry's Lake area of Manahawkin. After the death of his wife, Bob moved to Lafayette Hill, PA to be closer to his children.
He actively volunteered at the St. Francis Community Center food bank on Long Beach Island for over 20 years. His work there filled him with pride and also brought him many new friendships. He loved having lunch or coffee with "the guys" as often as possible. Bob also loved working with his hands, enjoying such hobbies as model ship construction and building bird houses. He was the king of puzzle books and especially loved Sudoku. He and Joanne enjoyed seeing their two grandsons Ryall and Declan most of all, sharing holidays and activities with them whenever they could. Everyone who worked or spent any time with Bob remarked on his kindness, selflessness, and charm; the staff at his assisted living facility in Lafayette Hill quickly deemed him their "favorite."
Bob is survived by: son Robert F.R. Curry, Jr. (Virginia) of Allentown, PA; daughter Jennifer Curry Pham (Tung) of Missoula, MT; son Sean A.G. Curry (Paul Fitzgerald) of Philadelphia, PA; and his two grandsons Ryall and Declan Pham. Also surviving are his sister Andrea N. Hill of Westville, NJ; his brother Richard F. Curry of Hockessin, DE; and multiple nephews, nieces, and cousins.
The family will announce services at a later date, in conjunction with those being planned for his late wife, Joanne.
In lieu of flowers, donations to the St. Francis food pantry, via "St. Francis Human Concerns," 4700 Long Beach Blvd, Long Beach Twp., NJ 08008 are appreciated.
