Mary I. Hayes

May 25, 1947 – February 21, 2026

Mary I. Hayes (nee Stinson), age 78, passed away with her family around her and returned home on February 21, 2026, after a courageous battle with cancer. Mary was born in Philadelphia to the late Richard and Catherine Stinson and was the sister of the late Tommy, Jimmy and Johnny Stinson.

While raising her children, Mary became a real estate broker and was one of the first female brokers with Re/Max Real Estate in Philadelphia. After many successful years in real estate, Mary retired and enrolled at Moore College of Art and Design to pursue her long-time passion for painting and sculpting. She was accepted into Moore based on a painting she created in France, using only the make-up she brought with her on the trip. Mary loved to paint, and her house is filled with artwork into which she poured her heart and soul.

Mary was a devoted wife, supporting her husband Ed in his law practice and in everything he did. Mary and Ed were inseparable for almost 48 years. She loved to travel to the islands and particularly loved the family vacations each year at Atlantis in the Bahamas.

More than anything, Mary loved being "mom-mom" to her six grandchildren, Colin, Kacey, Genna, Jake, Caden and Juliette, whom she loved unconditionally and whom she supported in everything they did. You could not help but notice Mary's face light up just a little differently when she was with them and she often said she lived for her grandchildren.

Mary was always the bright light in a room and she always made everyone around her feel special. Mary would often tell the story that had everyone laughing, or she would find a way to become the story herself. She cared about others more then she cared about herself, and it showed in everything she did. If Mary was your friend, there was nothing she would not do for you.

Mary is survived by her devoted husband of 43 years, Edward J. Hayes. She is also survived by, and was a loving mother to her son Robert L. Getz, Jr. and his wife, Tiffany, and to her daughter Colleen Gorman and her husband George. Mary often said that Tiffany and George were not in-laws, but were instead her second daughter and son. Mary is also survived by her six grandchildren and some very special and dear friends, Terry and Tia Anderson and Denise and Jeff Manto.

Mary's family will not only shed tears because she is gone, but they will also smile brightly because she has lived, and because she has touched their lives in so many ways, all for the better. She will be sadly missed, but she will never be forgotten.

At Mary's request, services are private. In lieu of flowers, the family would welcome donations in her name and memory to the Center School, 2450 Hamilton Avenue, Abington PA 19001, a school for children with learning differences. The family is desirous of renovating the art classroom at Center School and to have it named forever, the "Mary Hayes Art Room" in loving memory of Mary. Any donations would go a long way to making that happen. The family thanks you.
