Edward Michael Weinrich, Sr. passed away on June 17th, 2026 following a brief illness. At the time of his passing, he resided in Fort Myers Florida. He was 92 years old.
Born in North Philadelphia to Herman and Johanna (nee Leinau) Weinrich Eddie was the youngest of five siblings. Edward was pre-deceased by his wife, Kathryn (Kippy) with whom he celebrated 59 years of marriage. He is survived by his five sons; Ted (Stella), Michael (Debbie), Herman (Beth), John (Linda) and Stephen (Kristin). Eddie was also an enormously proud Grandfather known as Opa to 16 Grandchildren and Great Grandfather or Gopa to 9 greats, with number 10 due in December.
Throughout his life, Eddie was a deeply religious man and lived as an excellent role model guided by, a spiritual devotion to the Lord and a deep love for his family. He was committed and driven by hard work and had a quiet humility about him - all of which was combined with a terrific sense of humor.
In the days of midwifery, Eddie was born in his family’s home which was attached to his parents’ bakery at Germantown and Lehigh Avenues. To say that he may have been born with baking in his blood would be an understatement. In his adult working career, it became his passion.
His early years of schooling began at St. Boniface and when not at school, he spent many afternoons attending Phillies (NL) and Athletics (AL) games with his sisters at nearby Shibe park. At that time there were two MLB teams playing in the city. For his high school years Eddie moved to Ventnor, New Jersey and attended Atlantic City High School while living with extended family at the shore. While attending ACHS he met Kippy and the couple fell in love. They were true high school sweethearts. Following graduation in 1951, Edward went on to Villanova University where he graduated in 1955 with a degree in Economics. He was the first in his family to obtain a college degree. While at Villanova, he played on the Sprint football team. He always remained a devoted Wildcat sports fan. Two of his most exciting and exhilarating moments came when attending the NCAA championships in Houston in 2016 and in San Antonio in 2018 with his family at his side.
After college, Edward and Kippy were married in 1956 and started their life in Hawaii, where Eddie was stationed for his military service in the United States Army. Upon completion of his military duty, he returned stateside and moved back to the Willow Grove area, where his parents had now settled into operating their latest bakery location on Easton Road having built it from the ground up. In the 1960’s, Ed and Kip became the owners and operators of Weinrich’s Bakery. Together, they successfully ran the business for over 50 years. Edward put the love for his wife at the top of his list of priorities along with love for his children and extended family, and after that was his love for operating a retail bakery business. Even after establishing a legendarily loyal customer base, he worked extremely hard to maintain his success but never sought out public recognition or special attention to spotlight his accomplishments. To him, excellence in the bakery products was always the gold standard he required. He always maintained a professional manner with his focus specific to creating the highest quality products for his followers. Eddie had an amazing ability to manage up to 20 different projects at once before the term “multi-tasking” was ever coined. His success did enable him to serve on the national board of directors for the Retail Bakery Association of America as well as becoming the president of the Philadelphia Chapter where he and Kip hosted national bakery conventions when they were held in Philadelphia. Upon his retirement from active management duties in the bakery, he adapted to a new role as president emeritus. His new duties included meeting and greeting the customers at the shop along with providing expert guidance on proper mixing methods and ingredient options for the various seasonal recipes. Edward was always striving to stay current with the times and would stay in touch by phone, email, texts and facetime whenever he could! Zoom consultations were especially helpful to instruct his baking staff in Willow Grove. His loving helpful words of encouragement coupled with a reassuring story made any situation conclude with a positive outcome with good spirits and smiles to all. He was our amazing, fearless and steady leader, our Captain and our family’s one and only G.O.A.T.
In addition to being a successful bakery entrepreneur and the greatest baker of all time, Eddie enjoyed being a world traveler. Many trips were led by Ed and Kip and included their large circle of family and friends that took them all over Europe and the Caribbean. The trips were always fun and memorable because Edward enjoyed seeking new adventures and loved exploring new destinations. He was an avid fisherman, loved boating and always made sure to include those two pleasures on the trips to fish for a variety of elusive species. These fishing expeditions took he and his sons to Cabos San Lucas, Alaska, Islands throughout Caribbean, the Florida Keys, Chesapeake Bay and frequent trips to South Jersey. On these outings, he usually managed to land the most interesting fish as well as the largest catch of the day. Edward seemed to have the good fortune of luck on his side throughout the course of his lifetime.
In his final years, Eddie moved down to Fort Myers, Florida to spend time enjoying the Gulf Coast and avoiding muscle stiffness and soreness brought on by northeastern winters. The senior lifestyle included time spent watching Jeopardy, Wheel of Fortune and playing marathon Rummikub games with his sister Cass who lived there with her daughters three blocks away. His sister and nieces Joanne and Cassie always treated Ed as royalty and always included Uncle Eddie in all of their daily activities including many lunch and dinner get togethers, taking many cruises on the high seas and making regular trips to Costco. He also enjoyed hosting his family and extended family whenever their schedules permitted.
Eddie lived his life as the embodiment of how to work hard, play hard and pray hard. For many years he was a daily communicant and active participant in Bible Study in the faith community where he lived. He prayed the Rosary every day and also did the Stations of the Cross daily. True to his spiritual ways he maintained a prayer list which was a mile long. He prayed every day for everyone he knew and for the world.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend his funeral mass on Monday, December 7th, 2026 at St. David’s Roman Catholic Church in Willow Grove, PA. Visitation with family will be at 10:30 am followed by Mass at 11:00 am.
Following funeral services all family and friends are invited to gather at his beloved bake shop for a celebration of his life.
Interment will be held at the United States Military Cemetery, Newtown, PA. on a future date.
In memory of Edward please perform some random act of kindness for someone else. It will make the world a better place.
