Edward G.
Mekel
Aug 29, 1933 — Aug 14, 2025
In Loving Memory of Honorable Edward G. Mekel
It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of the Honorable Edward G. Mekel, a devoted husband of 62 years, loving father, and cherished Pop Pop, who departed this life on August 14, 2025, fifteen days shy of his 92nd birthday.
Born and raised in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, Edward spent his entire life in the city he loved. He maintained lifelong friendships with those he met at Saint Athanasius Grade School, a testament to his loyalty and warmth. Edward's unwavering commitment to justice, compassion, and family defined a life well lived.
A proud graduate of Villanova Law School—one of its earliest classes—Edward began his career in public service through his work with Voter Registration in Philadelphia. He went on to serve with honor and distinction as a Municipal Court Judge for over 32 years, earning the deep respect of colleagues and the community for his wisdom, fairness, and steadfast integrity.
Outside the courtroom, Edward was a man of many passions. A gifted photographer, he had a keen eye for capturing the essences of the moment. His lifelong love of aviation led to a hobby of building and flying model airplanes. He was a founding member of the Northeast Philadelphia Radio Control Club and served as editor of its newsletter, Skywriters. He also had a fondness for trains and found joy in both watching and playing golf. Edward loved to travel, with memorable trips to the Catskills with his in-laws and a special journey to Ireland, where he embraced his Irish heritage with pride. He was equally proud of his Lithuanian roots.
Above all, Edward was a devoted family man. His love for his wife, Hilda Mekel, was unwavering and deep. As a father, he guided with gentleness and wisdom, and as Pop Pop, he filled the lives of his grandchildren with laughter, warmth, and unforgettable memories.
Edward was married to his beloved wife Hilda, a devoted father to Diana Beth Jackiewicz (Edward L.), Edward J. Mekel (Jonia), and Alan Mekel; proud Pop Pop to his grandchildren Olivia Jackiewicz, Alyssa Mekel, and Ryan Mekel. He was the dear brother of the late Alvernia McCabe, Jack Mekel, Dave Mekel and Elaine Foley; and is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews, extended family and cherished friends.
