Charles W. Greenberg Sr.

October 6, 1933 - December 12, 2024

Charles (Charlie) Greenberg of Abington, Pennsylvania passed away peacefully at home on the

evening of December 12, 2024 surrounded by his family.

Charlie is survived by his wife of 58 years, Jane (nee Gregorio), their children Chuck (Amy),

Dan (Maria), Paul (Tricia), Patty (Dave) and their grandchildren Charlie, Tom, Natalie, Aaron,

Danielle, AJ, Mary, Jack, Matthew, Luke, Paul, and Joseph. He is preceded in death by his

daughter Mary Jane, his parents Jacob and Loretta, his older brother Joseph 'Hank' and his twin

sister Nancy.

He was a longtime parishioner of Our Lady Help of Christians Parish in Abington where he

proudly served as an Eucharistic Minister for decades. Charlie and Jane could always be seen

attending the 10:30AM Sunday Mass.

Charlie was born in Philadelphia on October 6, 1933 and graduated from Saint Athanasius Parish

grade school, LaSalle College High School, and LaSalle College. He was a star basketball player

in both high school and college and was a member of the 1954 National Championship team, the

1955 National Runner-Up team, and was captain of the Explorers his senior year. He was

inducted into the LaSalle College Hall of Athletes in 1984.

After graduating from LaSalle in 1956 with a Bachelors of Arts in Secondary Education, he

served as a Specialist in the United States Army from 1956 to 1958. Charlie was stationed on

the island of Okinawa as a crypto operator and also coached and played on the battalion

basketball team.

Charlie then began his 40 year career in Catholic education at Camden Catholic High School

where he taught German, Biology, and Religion from 1958 to 1962. Charlie then started his 36

year tenure at Father Judge High School where he taught German and English from 1962 to 1974

then became one of the first Lay Vice-Principals in the Archdiocese of Philadelphia. He became

an expert in developing the master roster for the entire student body and even when he retired in

1998, Charlie came back to Judge for years helping with the rostering process. He also served as

a guidance counselor for years helping thousands of Crusaders find their path in life. Charlie was

inducted into the Father Judge High School Hall of Fame in 1998.

Charlie also had a passion for coaching basketball. He was the head freshman and assistant

varsity coach at LaSalle College from 1958 to 1962. He then was the head coach at Father Judge

from 1964 to 1974 where he had a record of 111-37 in the Philadelphia Catholic League and

165-70 overall. He resigned at the beginning of the 1974 season to become Vice-Principal at

Judge. Charlie was inducted into the first class of the Father Judge High School Basketball Hall

of Fame in 2000.

Even after his coaching days were over, he was still involved in Philadelphia basketball. Charlie

and his brother Hank could be seen every weekend at Catholic League North games. Sometimes

their kids were playing, sometimes it was just a big game that they could not miss, but no one

would be surprised to see Charlie and Hank at a game on a Friday night or a Sunday afternoon.

In 2005, Charlie also served as President of the Markward Basketball Club which honors

Philadelphia area high school basketball players.

Beyond the classroom and basketball court, there was probably no other place Charlie would

love to be than Sea Isle City, New Jersey. SIC was where he met the love of his life Jane and

where they would spend over 50 years vacationing. They could always be found on the 34th

Street Beach with their kids and eventually just themselves. Charlie loved riding the waves and

walking along the beach with his famous beach hat.

Relatives and friends are invited to his viewing at Our Lady Help of Christians in Abington on

Friday December 20, 2024 from 9:00am -10:45am followed by a mass of Christian burial at

11:00am. Internment will be at Holy Sepulchre Cemetery in Cheltenham, PA.
