Obituary for Thomas A. Clanton Sr.

Thomas Alan Clanton Sr., also known as T.C., or Uncle Tommy, was born in Augusta, Georgia to Eula Mae and William Henry Clanton Sr. Eula Mae and William moved their six children, William Henry (aka Murphy), Queen Esther, James, John, Joanne, and Thomas to Philadelphia, Pa. Thomas was raised in a Christian home and baptized at the age of twelve at Mt. Zion Baptist Church in Germantown, PA. After attending Germantown High School, Thomas was drafted into the U.S. Army, where he attained the rank of Specialist E-4 and served in the Vietnam War. He was very proud to have been able to serve his country.
After returning home from Vietnam, Thomas met the love of his life, Denise Bynum. They married in 1971 and consequently raised three children together, Renita, Michelle, and Thomas Jr. In the earlier part of Thomas’ life, he had worked as a machinist at the Lee Tire Company located in Conshohocken, Pennsylvania until it permanently closed. Thomas then became employed with SEPTA as a bus driver and later gained a supervisory position until his retirement after twenty-six years of service. Thomas loved driving through the city of brotherly love. He often shared funny stories of his bus driving days.
In his earlier years, Thomas enjoyed fishing, listening to jazz music and also the blues. He also enjoyed dancing to the oldies, but goodies with his wife. They would travel up and down the east coast of the U.S. to visit family. They loved to travel to the Caribbean as well as frequently trying their luck at the casinos. Thomas was a true family-man, a good father, a good husband, a good neighbor, as well as a good provider. Thomas was always quick to help anyone in need, whether family member or stranger, and he did it without any expectation of repayment. He did it just because he felt it was the right thing to do.
Thomas put a high value on friendship. In fact, a few of his friendships spanned over five decades. Some of his friends of fifty, plus years were James Floyd, Tyrone Battle and Ed Wright. Thomas was known for his kindness, his generosity, his loyalty, his storytelling, as well as his relationship with our savior the Lord Jesus Christ and our creator GOD the Father. To know Thomas was to love him.
A very special thank-you to family friends Geraldine Bryant and Keith Hinmon, who have consistently and selflessly made themselves available time and time again, going above and beyond to help our family in our time of need when Thomas became ill.
Thomas ascends home leaving his wife of fifty years, Denise to mourn, his daughter Renita and son-in law, Stacy Adams and his grandson Bryce; his daughter Michelle and son-law Jean-Albert Adam and his grandson Julian, his son Thomas Jr. and daughter-in-law Victoria Clanton and his grandsons Austin and Gavin. Thomas also leaves his brother John and wife Vivian, his sister Joanne and brother-in-law Alvin Clark and a host of nieces, nephews, and aunts.
Those who preceded Thomas in death are his parents William H. Clanton, Sr. and Eula Mae Clanton, his sister Betty Jean Clanton, his brother James Clanton, his sister Queen Esther, and his brother William Murphy.
“You’ve got to live to get old, and you can’t take anything with you, so live your life!”-Thomas Clanton Sr.
(Revelation 21:4) HE will wipe away every tear from their eyes, and death shall be no more, neither shall there be mourning, nor crying, nor pain anymore, for the former things have passed away.”
Lovingly submitted,
The Clanton Family
