Margaret E. Dando “Peg”, age 104 passed away September 30, 2015 in her home at Normandy Farms Estates. Born in West Philadelphia to the late Raymond and Helen (nee Trapier) Ellis she was raised in Glenside she graduated Cheltenham High School in 1929 and Moore College of Art in 1935. She married William Dando in 1935 they raised their two children in Glenside, moving to Normandy Farms in 1984.
A member of the Hugenot Society Mrs. Dando was a relative of Thomas Heyward, Jr. of South Carolina, a signer of the Declaration of Independence. Peg was instrumental in establishing the Glenside Library building after years of books being kept in home basements. She was also on the committee to start evening classes at Cheltenham High School. She was also honored for being an original member of first Questers (Country Side), est. 1944.
Mrs. Dando taught drawing and History of Art at the Stevens School in Chestnut Hill and also served as a committee member and exhibitor at the Woodmere Gallery in Chestnut Hill. A trained portrait artist, she also painted flowers, landscapes and miniatures. For over 20 years, her note cards of the Normandy Farms’ picturesque barn and silo were sole in the gift shop. Many of her friends have received personal notes and cards painted especially for them.
Peg played golf at Manufacturers Golf and Country Club where she has been a member since 1944. An avid gardener until she was 97,she was often seen tending to her plants in the late evening under the lights. She cites being a nutrition and exercise advocate as the reason for her over 100 years of life.
She is the loving mother of Jeffrey (Marge Luenig) of Martha’s Vineyard, MA and Virgina “Gina” Kremp (Charles) of Jenkintown, PA. She has six grandchildren, Holly and Evan Dando, Scott (Chrissy), Steve (Leslie), Drew (Laura) and Chad (Alicia) Kremp, and eight great grandchildren
