Obituary for Ezzeldin M. Salama

Dr. Ezzeldin (Dean) Salama, loving husband, father and grandfather, died peacefully at home on Wednesday the 16th of June at the age of 93.

Dean is predeceased by his wife, Ellen Salama, as well as by all of his siblings originally from Cairo, Egypt. We hope they are all happily reunited now. Dean is survived by his children, Donald Salama of St. Petersburg, Florida; David (Lori) Salama of Charlotte, North Carolina; and Karen McCain of Elkins Park, Pennsylvania. He is also survived by his loving grandchildren, Morgan, Colin, Ben, and Nolan Salama and Vaughn, Amina, and Aurora McCain.

Dean was born on February 22, 1928 in Cairo, Egypt to Mohamed and Munira Salama. He spent his formative years studying hard and playing chess and backgammon at the cafe with his best friends. He obtained his medical degree from Ein Shams Medical School in Cairo and completed his internal medicine residency in London.

While completing his residency at Barnet General Hospital in London, he met his future wife, nurse Ellen O’Driscoll, at a bus stop. He paid her fare, they chatted for the entire ride, and the rest is history. With a focus on securing an exciting career and starting a family, Dean was willing to retrain in another medical specialty that was on the rise, but short-staffed in the US- child psychiatry. Together, they moved to Michigan and later Milwaukee, Wisconsin where they settled for many years raising a family.

Dean spent his career working as a founding child psychiatrist at St. Mary’s Hill Hospital, the first inpatient psychiatric hospital for children in Milwaukee. He was ahead of his time in his focus on the treatment of the whole family as well as the importance of a healthy and therapeutic staff culture . His children recall incidents of being approached by fellow students at school and told about how their father, Dr. Salama, significantly changed their lives for the better.

Dean and Ellen led a life full of travel, living alternately in Ireland, the U.S., and Mexico after retirement. He loved special cars, an interest he passed on to his sons. He was exceptionally intelligent and enjoyed a good debate, often posing a framework or angle that no one else had considered. He followed the news voraciously and could provide a historical and political overview of nearly every country at a moment’s notice. He loved to be taken care of, and has missed Ellen for a very long time, dreaming about her waving him over to her.

A small family funeral is scheduled for Thursday June 24, 2021 at 3:30pm at the George Fitzpatrick Funeral Home in Abington, Pennsylvania.
