Obituary for Eugene J. "Gene " Winters

November 7, 1938 – January 31, 2023
WINTERS, Eugene Jr. (Gene, Geno) of Abington passed away peacefully on January 31 at the age of 84, surrounded by his loving family. He is preceded in death by his father, Eugene Winters Sr. and his mother Margaret (nee McFadden) Winters. He is survived by the love of his life Margaret “Peggy” (nee Carr) and his children Monica Polo (Joseph), Nadine McLaughlin (Angelo), Gene Winters III (Lisa) and Timothy Winters (Trish) as well as his sister Margaret Mary Witalec, his 9 grandchildren: Alexis, Anthony, Melanie, Ryan, Maeve, Hannah, Aidan, Riley and Brendan and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Gene was born and raised in the Port Richmond section of Philadelphia. As a young man he loved hanging with his lifelong friends “The Port Richmond Jesters” at the 87 AOH Club and the Chatterbox. Some of his greatest memories are from his summers spent with his buddies in Wildwood, where he drank and danced and laughed day in and day out. He especially loved going to afternoon jam sessions at the Emerald to listen to the band “The High Hopes”. He met his future wife Peggy at one such jam session. He was up by the stage clowning around wearing a gigantic straw hat and swallowing a live goldfish when Peggy spotted him from the back of the room. Their laughter started there and continued for over 62 years.
Gene served in the army and married Peg in 1963. They moved to Abington in 1968 and provided the happiest childhood imaginable for their four children. Gene worked for Sears delivery and in his free time he loved to tend to his flower beds, listen to Frank Sinatra, entertain family and friends, and keep his beer meister in tip top shape. He gave his children the greatest gift of all, which was loving their mother and showing them what a beautiful marriage looks like.
