Obituary for Edith M. Gordon

GORDON, Edith M. (nee Scholtz) of Philadelphia passed away peacefully on December 29, 2021 at the age of 79.

Edith was born and raised in the Kensington section of Philadelphia by the late Victor T. and Marian M. (Jeandell) Scholtz. She graduated at the top of her class from Mastbaum Vocational High School in June, 1960. After graduation, Edith worked for Rohm and Haas as a clerk stenographer for several years and held other office jobs throughout her life while running a household.

She met the love of her life, Harry, at St. Michael’s Lutheran Church as a teenager. They married at St. Michael’s in February, 1966 and were devoted partners for 55+ years. Together they lovingly raised their daughter, Kara and enjoyed being the grandparents of Mariah Small.

With Harry by her side, Edith bravely faced many health challenges through most of her adult life. Her struggles prevented her from doing many of the things she longed to do, however she found enjoyment in serving others and keeping her mind active. She loved the beach, enjoyed working on needle point projects, was an avid reader, and enjoyed playing board games. She valued her family and friends and would often reminisce about fun times she had growing up with her grandparents, cousins, sisters and friends. She took great pride in being a mother and was involved with the Kennedy Crossan Elementary School's Home and School Association during the 1970s and early 1980s. She was an active member of St. Michael’s Lutheran Church for many years. She enjoyed singing in the church choir, leading Brownies and Girl Scouts, teaching in the Sunday School and Bible school programs, and volunteering her time at church fundraisers and events. In recent years, she became a member at St. John’s where she continued to volunteer her time until she was unable to.

Edith will be remembered as a gentle, thoughtful woman who never stopped thinking of others. In addition to her husband, daughter, and granddaughter, Edith is survived by her sisters, Margaret (John) Fleming, Marilyn (late John) Hrywnak, her brother-in-law and wife, Robert and Elizabeth Gordon, and several nieces and nephews.

Relatives and friends are invited to her funeral service Wednesday January 12, 11:30 at St. John’s Lutheran Church 3101 Tyson Ave. Phila., PA 19149 where the family will receive guests from 10:30 to service time. If planning on attending the luncheon after the service, you will need to bring your COVID vaccination card. Int. will be Thursday January 13, 2022, 11:30 am at Washington Crossing Cemetery Newtown. In lieu of flowers, contributions to St. John’s at the above address or to St. Michael’s Lutheran Church 2139 E. Cumberland St. Phila, PA 19125 would be appreciated by the family.
