Obituary for William T Granger Sr.

William T. Granger (Bill) was born May 26, 1942 to William Sr. (who is deceased) and Pearline Johnson in Philadelphia, PA. He had one brother, Roger Wayne, who preceded Bill in death by 12 years. His mother, who is still living, is in her 92nd year.

Bill received his education through the Archdiocese of Philadelphia. In grade school, he was an alter boy at Our Lady of the Holy Souls in Tioga and also a Boy Scout. He received the Boy Scout of America Ad Altare Dei Award for his continued service and outstanding accomplishments as a troop member.

Bill attended Northast Catholic High School and was a member of the Track and Field team his first two years. In his upperclassman years, he joined the school theatre group, performing stage musicals and vignettes.

After graduating high school, Bill enlisted in the United States Air Force where he served 5 years active duty. He later joined the Air Force Reserves and served for 9 years in the Strategic Air Command (SAC) Unit where he was promoted to Master Seargent (MSGT) and Unit Leader.

Bill was employed by PTC, which later became SEPTA; and remained with them for 40+ year as a busdriver in the greater Philadelphia area. During those years, he received many commendations for driving safety and, we just learned, was a mentor to new drivers. In telling a former Septa driver of Bill’s passing, she shared her story of how when she and others were brand new to Septa, Bill introduced himself and took them under his wing; showing them how things worked and what they needed to learn as a driver.

Bill loved music and singing with his church and community choirs. Another love of his was Movies. He knew all the ‘old time actors” and their movies. In recent years, he may not have known the actors, but he knew the plots and scenes of every film out there. You lost ANY movie trivia game when you played with him.

And he enjoyed all kinds of games: ping-pong and shooting pool on his pool table. Board games, crossword and word search puzzles; he had an obsession with the game Boggle for several years.

His biggest love was for his children and they love him. There was never a fight over toys, his children competed for his time. He was there to ride all the high, fast rollercoasters and the crazy round-n-round rides. He was there to teach them how to roller skate, how to work a yo-yo and how to ride bicycles.

His teaching even extended to driving! Not just his children; he taught his bride-to-be and her brother and sisters how to drive, and would tell funny stories of the adventures he’d had as they we were learning.

During the last 5 years of his life, Bill was stricken with Lewy Bodies Dementia, which ravished his mind and eventually his body. But up to the end, he had a smile and was loved by all the caretakers in the many facilities that tried to help him.

Bill leaves Martina, his wife of 50 years, his children, nieces, nephews, cousins, and a host of relatives and friends to cherish his memory.
